Over the course of the year your system can earn you at
least 43p for every unit of electricity that you generate
This revenue is known as the Feed in Tariff (FIT), which
became available in the UK
on 1st April 2010. The Feed in Tariff pays this for a set number of years,
currently 25, and is linked with inflation. To encourage you, the FIT is set
at 43.3p per unit for 25 years for systems registered before 31st March 2012.
This then drops to 37.8p Feed in Tariff rates will be paid for each unit of
electricity generated. As well as this, any excess electricity will be
exported back to the grid earning you and extra 3p per unit
For example if you have a 2kw system and have a south
facing roof the Government’s calculations say you would generate 1590kw/h in
year. This is worth £652.00 per year. You’ve avoided buying electricity from
your supplier at £0.14 per unit. This is worth £110.00 per year. You will
then export approximately £24.00 worth of electricity. Giving you a grand
total of £786.00 per year. If your system costs £8000.00 then you are getting
a 9.8% return on your investment.

The performance of
solar PV systems is impossible to predict with certainty due to the
variability in the amount of solar radiation (sunlight) from location to
location and from year to year. This estimate is based upon the Government’s
standard assessment procedure for energy rating of buildings (SAP) and is
given as guidance only. It should not be considered as a guarantee of
performance.
